Apple instructs reps on how to handle iPhone 4 reception issues

One of the biggest complaints (and for good reason) over the iPhone 4 is the strange and overlooked design of it that causes reception issues when held a certain way.  This of course will cause a ton of dropped calls and the like which is not acceptable.  So while Apple hasn’t had much to say about it besides, “hold it the other way”, they have explained to their reps on how to handle the situation if anyone calls complaining about it.

Basically, the AppleCare reps are to focus on managing expectations instead of fixing the problem.  What does that mean, exactly?  They are basically to tell you the same thing that Apple already has, “avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.”  And though Apple may agree that adding bumpers could fix the problem, they refuse to accept this alternative to help out their loyal customers… for now at least.  Another message to the reps also said this, “we ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers — DON’T promise a free bumper to a customer.”
